When encountering a computational question, far too many students automatically start to perform an algorithm. Many times, mental math is a much better approach. This document, Training the Mind , provides examples and exercises for Instructors to increase their awareness of when it’s appropriate to bring in mental math when solving computational problems. I encourage you to use this as an additional training tool for your Instructors. In turn, they can utilize these exercises when working with students.
