Zeroing in on Curriculum and Instruction: Finding 10% and 1% of Numbers

One of the highlights of the Mathnasium Method™ is our approach to introducing the concept of percent to mean “for each 100.” As students master this approach, it becomes apparent that alternate strategies for solving percentage questions are sometimes in order because the numbers are not “friendly” enough. In this article and future articles, we will explore other ways to handle a wide range of percentage questions.

Let’s get started and see how to find 10% and 1% of a given number. Click here [1] to download the document. I encourage you all to print this out and share it with your Instructors at staff meetings for ongoing training purposes. As always, feedback is requested and appreciated.

Using both 10% and 1% it is very easy to find other percents as well. Laurie
7% is just 7 times 1%
11% is just 10% + 1%
are just two examples

I agree with Laurie, as a student in high school, I actually used a method much like the “for each 100” method. I would break up my number into 1s, 10s, and 100s. I would proceed to use our method for the 100s, then I would add a zero to the 10s, use the method, then move the decimal back one spot. I would do the same with 1s, but add 2 zeros, use the method, move back 2 decimal spots, then add everything up.

Yes I love this methodology. Not only does it benefit my kids but it amazes the parents during an appointment every time!
