Toronto is an incredible microcosm of different cultures spread throughout the city. Its hip, happening, and electric vibe captures your heart. There’s plenty to eat, see, and discover! You’ll be dazzled with the posh Yorkville district, the amazing shopping at the Eaton Centre, and the Hockey Hall of Fame. Toronto is an hour drive away from the world-famous Niagara Falls, the pristine lakes and forests of Muskoka and the Kawarthas, and the nation’s capital region.

The Convention will be held at the Westin Harbour Castle, which is located on the waterfront where many rooms and suites feature stunning views of Lake Ontario. We will be hosting this event in Canada’s largest hotel ballroom – the spectacular Metropolitan Ballroom. The hotel location is minutes away from downtown Toronto with nearby attractions, including the Scotiabank Arena, Rogers Centre, and the CN Tower. See Toronto from a unique perspective with the legendary EdgeWalk. Check out the following link to truly discover Toronto: w [6]ww.seetorontonow.com [6].

Feel free to visit the Canadian government’s website to ensure you have the proper documentation to enter Canada: https://travel.gc.ca/returning/travelling-to-canada [7]. We will also be providing more information about passports and travel requirements in future posts.

We are excited to see everyone in Toronto in 2019!

As a Toronto native I highly recommend that:

(i) People who are planning to fly book their flights very early as mid-July is very peak season for Toronto.
(ii) Porter Airlines (flyporter.com) flies into a little airport (YTZ) right next to the conference hotel nonstop from Boston (BOS), Chicago (MDW), New York (EWR) and Washington (IAD). This is much more convenient than Toronto’s bigger airport (YYZ) which is about 40-60 minutes away from the conference hotel depending on traffic.
(iii) For driving purposes Toronto is about 4 hours from Detroit airport (DTW) and 2 hours from Buffalo airport (BUF). People who plan on attending with their families might realize significant cost savings by flying into Detroit or Buffalo and driving. The Canadian airline taxes alone for flying into a Canadian airport are more than $100 per ticket. Give yourself extra time for land border crossings due to the peak summer season.
(iv) Given the location of the conference a rental car would be expensive and highly unnecessary (hotel parking alone could be $30-$40 per day). There is a ton of excellent public transportation/taxis/uber and it is very walkable and safe. If you plan on taking a side trip before or after the conference then rent a car only for those days. (If flying into Buffalo or Detroit consider possibly returning the rental car during the conference and renting a new one for the return trip home).
(v) All travelers need a valid passport to enter Canada and to return to the U.S.
(vi) The Toronto Blue Jays stadium is right next door to the hotel but the Blue Jays do not play at home between July 7 and 22.
(vii) The Canadian dollar right now is at about 77 cents U.S. or $1.30. This could materially change by next July. U.S. cash dollars are highly accepted in Toronto as are Visa and MasterCard. Be careful and plan ahead as American Express is accepted at many fewer places than Visa or MasterCard (AMEX merchant fees are very high in Canada) and virtually no one will accept a Discover card. Canadian cash can be obtained at any bank or hotel or at the airport but the conversion rate will be lousy.
(viii) Call your cell phone provider ahead of time and lock in a reasonable Canadian rate for everyone traveling with you for data, calling and texting for all the days you will be in Canada. Avoid sticker shock (these roaming fees can be outrageous) by doing this well in advance.
